The White Oak Wave~ Oct 2026

If you live in Maysville, you know the question. Which White Oak Rd do you live on? There are 2 white Oak River Roads in Maysville ironically. One in Jones County, and one in Onslow county. Nearly running parallel along the actual white oak River, these 2 distinct roads have very different vibes and travel. The White Oak River is a blackwater river, close to 48 mi (77 km) long, on the coastal plain of southeast North Carolina in the United States. It empties in the Atlantic Ocean.

It rises in the White Oak Pocosin in northern Onslow County and southern Jones County approximately 15 mi (24 km) north of Jacksonville.

It flows east, then SSE, along the border between Onslow, Jones and Carteret counties, and forming the western boundary of Croatan National Forest. The lower 10 mi (16 km) of the river is a tidal estuary, approximately 1.6 km wide. It enters the Atlantic at Bogue Sound, then passes between two barrier islands (Bogue Banks and Bear Island) through Bogue Inlet into the open Atlantic at Onslow Bay. I've Kayaked many times up this river. By the time is makes its way to Maysville, it's merely a 10ft wide and 2ft deep creek at some points. Despite living on one side or the other, have you noticed the White Oak Wave? So, back in 2018, when we moved here, I told my wife, jokingly that I was going to make an honest effort to "Wave" at every person we pass on White Oak Onslow, or White Oak Jones. It was sort of a joke, but truly I took it to heart. An ambitious attempt to get an entire community, hundreds of people, young, old, tractors, busses, hitchhikers, ... a friendly wave of hello.

In 2026, we still do it. We jokes when you don't wave, and honestly assume you just missed us, and avenge to get you the next time, but there's something special about it we've come to make a culture out of. Since then, we've notcied a 1000% participation in the WHITE OAK WAVE -- Thanks!

If you are a white oak transient, or a resident since Maysville had a movie theatre, or find yourself driving onslow or jones, pick up our tradition of ambition, wave at your neighbors, and maybe make someone's day!

We're moving right into October like a freight train. As the last quarter falls upon us, 2026 becomes the quiet exit speeding past us like a blur. Running towards 2027, another year is on it's way!

The Feed store... is doing great! We're so happy how this has turned out, and we're so glad for each and every customer. We're really inventing things along the way. And if I'm being honest, we started out not knowing anything, nothing. We still may not really know what we're doing, but we're giving a college try. We've gained so much support from the community, and I can't tell you home many people have said "I like supporting local" and that really hits home, and we really appreciate this. . . Really.

Most people don't know we actually have primary jobs, and are employed elsewhere. A longtime commitment to a cause, and dedicated years of work, this feed store was really a pleasant surprise and unexpected journey we .. just didn't see. I'd love to say we had the hindsight, the genius to do feed the surrounding counties, save people money, help people be better homesteaders. It comes with a satisfaction that we often don't get to speak about with our customers. It took so many people to get us all here. We also couldn't make this happen without an overwhelming support from our staff, and our town. We rely strongly on staff to help us run. Take a moment to greet and say hello to them, they've worked hard to be staff, and to be honest, being staff requires high standards. We require a lot more than just a person running a register. Our staff know animals, they know feed, and rely on ongoing education to be better resources for you, our customer!

A Hardware Store?

Ok, I'm going to admit when i said we're "Going to become a hardware store" --- I might have been a bit overzealous and perhaps a bit over ambitious even. So, what is hardware? Is it a wall of screws, hammers, wood post, t-post, chainsaws, nuts n bolts, washers, spacers, fencing, fertilizer, fly control, flea control, blah blah and blah?

Sigh...* I mean, the catalog is 6" thick, and to order a single isle worth of Ace Hardware stuff, could set us for an easy 10k-20k.

So, we modestly started getting things in. Things that people have said they need. But are we going to have 10 ft of nuts and bolts, chains, posts of all size, ropes and whayt-have-ya? I don't know, I don't think we can everything right now, not yet. We're making an honest attempt though, really. PVC glue/primer? Got it, dog ties, chicken boxes, coops, feeders, scoops?! WE got IT!

It's a bit like going to the grocery store though. We ordered our first few shipments of "things" and by the the time we placed it on the floor, it looked like we were already out of stock LOL? Sound familiar food lion? uh huh..

So, we're getting there. What we need is for you, the customer to tell us "Hey, we want you to carry this".

It's ok if you only need it once a year! Feel free to tell us. This is our community, and we're not just buying "stuff" to make money, we're trying to get stuff that makes sense for everyone. Admittingly, I am my own customer the other day. I need a water hose, and .. well driving to Jacksonville Lowes 28min one way, just wasn't on my exciting plans of the day. We have to be smart, and order things we're not going to sit on for 5 years. I mean, making 0.02 a washer won't help us, nor you. But if you need it? We'll get it. But we're not going to be able to just buy a wall of all size bolts for example. Open to suggestions any time, any day.

RV - The Lakes!

OMG, have you guys seen the Local attraction hiding under everyone's nose? The Lakes in Maysville is a semi-new RV/Camping/Rec Site that you should check out.

I have to admit, it's pretty nice there. But, that said, we are also planning to carry some supplies for these folks. This includes RV power cables, sewer pipe accessories, RV supplies that are somewhat "I need this right now" -- I recently encountered a few patrons who needed some "right now fixes" and they told me they had to drive almost 45 minutes away to get a standard power cable. This plug isn't sponsored by the Lakes, but I am happy to see this in our community.

We're going to attempt to stock a few things that might be useful to these patrons of the lakes. Sometimes dollar general just doesn't have 30 amp RV Standard Cables or Septic hoses at 12am. Don't worry, we're working on something special for you too.

The Farm

Welp.. We're exhausted. Honestly. Our farm, our animals, keep us from watching any tv. or getting board from a ticking clock. TV heh.. (prob nothing good there anyways) and we're happy to report its a small part time job taking care of these wackos we call farm pets. Our farm animals at this point have a SSN and a credit score. They are so spoiled, and so are we. We're blessed to have the ability and the capability to be good stewards to creatures that we honestly forget too often how special they are on this planet. Without them, we can't exist either. We owe it to be good to our animals, as well as feed them, the very best we can! Hint Hint!~

We also decided, there's room to make more bad adult decisions too! We decided to get another horse. Ok just kidding about bad decision. Maybe. We have had a mini/pony shetland for a year now, and decided we're ready to step up our quirky decision making and get an even bigger horse. This deal kind of just feel in our lap recently.

More to come on this later, but we're super excited for her. We have been making plans to get her, building new houses, and stepping up our game of the world of animal enclosures. We'll keep you posted on this great opportunity. We're basically a resort so I'm told, so I think she will be a good fit and help us learn even more about this majestic alien like creature with huge eyes and a manual thicker than the hardware catalog. Giddy up?

The Cow

So just a quick PSA about Cows as pets. Sigh, these wacka-doo's spend their day finding as much mischief as they possibly can. They do things I can't even.. !(@#, put here. I have no idea why, I don't know who programmed them this way, but .. seriously they do some wacky stuff with my yard. Flip tables, rolls chairs, nothing is allowed to be upright or normal. Bird Fountain, nope, has to be sideways and on the ground. Decking chairs, nope, those need to be 30ft away, and upside down.. like.. what in the world? How did you even get that, over .. there? ?? Her favoriate past time lately is mooooing at my neighbors at 3am. Sorry about that guys. HOW? HOW DO YOU DO THESE THINGS COW. HOW DID YOU JUST STEP OVER MY FENCE TO GET IN THE FRONT YARD? NO ONE TOLD US THIS STUFF LOL

ok I digress, and rant over. She so stinking cute though.. can't even be mad at this cow. ugh
