Summer Time Fun Time!

Is it officially Summer yet? Sure feels like it. Hey did you know, Long before backyard barbecues and lemonade stands, ancient Mesopotamians had their own way of celebrating summer—with honey! When the sun was high and the flowers were blooming, bees got busy, and so did the people. Honey wasn’t just a treat—it was sacred stuff, offered to gods, mixed into healing potions, and even used to preserve food. They saw bees as tiny winged workers of the divine, delivering sweetness straight from the heavens. You could say they were truly hive-minded when it came to summer. Today, we can find honey is still a precious gold, and yet ancient human rallied entire nations with the stuff. Meanwhile.. at Walmart, 20 version of fake honey. Remember to honor the Bee's. As everyone has heard the buzz, they are the key to all life's survival. Weird right?
What's new at the farm!??! All sorts of new babies arriving. Turkeys have finally hatched, and we have some awesome looking poults in the bag! We're still changing out fence as we can to cattle panel. Really nice fix to goats who like to use all my steel fencing as a back scratch, or just a slow way to gain access to the pen over time. Our goats have been breaking into various pens and we're chasing ghost holes. They are so clever, and persistent. I wish I had video of this, but one of my Nigerians got spooked in our chain-link area back yard (where he wasn't supposed to be of course) and spazzed out and power-dove into my chain link fence. Breaking the straps holding it to the posts in the ground, and laying an entire section flat on the ground. I've never seen that before. 5 Seconds later eating grass like nothing had happened. Neat trick, well played. I couldn't even be mad.
Recent storms have been interesting. We had a sudden crazy amount of rain (Sound familiar from last year's blog) Yea. Totally unexpected oceans worth amounts of rain, fell on us. Now I'm not complaining, we did really need some water, but sometimes, when it rains it pours. We had flooding everywhere, and animals were hard-up to find a dry spot anywhere. What really was interesting, was being woken by the Emergency Broadcast alert, telling us "Tornado, take shelter"

It was 12:15am and we'd been asleep for at least an hour, and the sound of all phones emanating through the house, one by one slightly with their own delay. It sure got my attention and I began to wake up to "Tornado, take Shelter - Maysville, NC" - It took a moment to comprehend and I honestly didn't believe it. You know how it is, Tornado.. Some counties away, of course, the alerts are often wide encompassing, this one was not. It had our road called out, and as you can see in the screenshot, we were "Right in the center" - So we immediately got dressed, got our shoes on, grabbed our phones, and began planning the "what if". We refreshed the weather app 100 times a minute! We peaked outside to see if we could see anything and there was a moment of "whoa, that's windy" to "Whoa.. let's get inside" We had about 8 minutes of notice.
Now, this is Eastern NC, we don't really have common tornados in the sense of what you'd see on TV. Large monster wedges, coming across an open planes with what feels like endless amounts of time to see them coming.. They are defiantly dangerous, and many have lost there lives, even here in our towns history. But I think we often get complacent when a situation could fall upon us. Remember to have a plan! Practice it with your family. Click here for more information about Torndaos in our region!
Flash forward, we had some debris from trees, nothing major. We did sadly loose some flock birds. We were happy we didn't see a Tornado, but then again, it was dark. Who knows how lucky we all got. We didn't see any report of damage, and it's debatable if it even touched the ground, but it's still worth a conversation to talk about! We certainly didn't go back to sleep fast after that. 8 Minutes wasn't a lot of time but the 90 minutes that it took to go back to sleep sure was, to think about "What if".
